I need help in diagnosing a slight rough idle problem....the car has been performing excellent over the past two years, but in the past two weeks I have been driving it every day and putting a lot of miles on it. I have developed a slight miss at idle which gets a little worse up to about 1500 rpm then disappears at 2000 rpm with the car in neutral. What systems and components might cause this slight-but annoying rough idle.
It is recommended that you invest in a diagnostic trouble code reader (GROUNDING PLUGS at $40, or an ALDL for $80 from MIDAMERICA) and a shop manual to interpret the codes. They are very easy to use, and they will provide you with the info necessary to solve your problem.
a common rough idle problem seems to be stuck or leaky fuel injectors. one way to test them is to check the impedence of each injector with a digital volt/ohm meter. i don't remeber what it should read, i think it's like 17ohms, but look for 1 or 2 that are way out of spec.
is your check engine light on? if so, it's throwing some codes. you can check them using a paper clip to ground 2 terminals (don't remember which ones) on the aldl under the dash and counting the flashes of the check engine light(?), kinda like morse code. don't recall all the details, it's a good idea to pick up a repair manual. i've used my haynes often. you can pick them up at the auto parts store
