My dad has a '91 and has been getting an intermittent SES light. We used a code scanner and found it to be a code 32. My question is with something like that, is it usually the solenoid, or the little sensor/switch with the wire on it? What's the best way to tell? My feeling is it's the switch. Also, where might be a good place to buy a replacement part?
If the SES sometimes comes on after a few minutes of driving at highway speeds it's likely the EGR valve under the rear of the plenum.
If it comes on consistently at thighway speeds it could be due to a vacuum leak, the solenoid, the sensor or the valve being defective.
With an intermittent problem you could run through the entire diagnostic scenario and still not observe the symptom.
You can get the valve at Auto Zone or Pep Boys; I don't think it is very pricey.
Once the plenum is removed (it may be necessary to also remove the runners) it takes a high quality open & box end 10mm wrench to remove the two bolts holding the EGR valve to the intake base.
