Hesitation/missfire with climate control on

Hesitation/missfire with climate control on
Has anyone come across this problem?
I have a 91 L98 the engine runs smoothly but if I press the auto button to turn on the climate control I get a hesitation/missfire about once every ten seconds, the engine stalls momentarily and then picks up again, if i turn the climate control off again the problem goes away.
It makes no difference whether the A/C comes on to make it cooler or the heater comes on to make it warmer, as soon as the auto button lights up the hesitation starts. It also makes no difference if I am cruising at highway speed or if the engine is idling the hesitation/missfire is still there.
Any Ideas?
