Default Coil in Cap

I have a 86 L98,, rebuilding everything and I am putting in a NOS Accel computer controlled distributor. I need a coil for this and thought things would be simple until I started reading about yellow wire, red wires, and I have no idea what all this means. Did a few searches, but they didn't help much. Can someone shed some light on this for me, or don't they mean anything. This is a basic stock daily driver ( going into a '78 S/A) with a mild cam and a little more compression, nothing exotic. Thanks.

You mention NOS and Accel in the same line. NOS is generally a reference to New Old Stock (OE in this case GM).

NOS as a reference to Accel? That would mean likely "Off the shelf" correct for the application you mentioned and Accel intended in their catalog.

What is the part # on the Accel distributor housing? I do believe that Accel did # their housings similar to the way GM #'d their assemblies. I'm pretty confident I understand the wire colors but maybe for your particular application you might want to source a "matching component" by Accel.

Numbers please !!

Accel I believe is going to be a 14005 red/white wires and a match to the GM 1985474 if the Accel you have is "coil in cap".

Damn I forgot there's a or was maybe a 14015 "THUNDER"

The yellow or red wired coils match the pickup. Here's a link to an EBAY primer. http://www.ebay.com/gds/HEI-Ignition...2053885/g.html

All of the coils have red & black - the white or yellow is the "match" for the polarity of the coil & pole piece combination.

Here's a link to another discussion on coil wire colors. The aftermarket coils might not be the same, but I'd guess they would be.

This is a New Old Stock ( Really dusty box) but never been installed Accel 59109. It's hard to find any listings for it as it's been discontinued but came at a really good price. I've used their dizzys on other cars I've had with good success. It seems to be the same as their 59107 without the vacuum advance. I am about to get the 140005 coil and that's what brought up the color question for me. I'll also check out the links you all provided later today. Thanks for all the input. Much appreciated.

I had the same question about wire color when I got my Accel coil..I called Accel and the tech guy told me to get the #140005 coil with the red/white wires for my 89 Corvette..He said if you use the red/yellow coil on our cars you will have hard starting problems because the polarity is wrong ..This is the coil/cap I used on my car and had no problems...If you look at the back of the fins on the coil cap you will notice I had to file it away at an angle, this is so it wouldn't hit the back of the hood, you will have to do the same thing to yours..WW

If it matters....................you won't be able to use the matching cover that bolts onto the plenum that covers the distributor, just saying.

I know about that, Actually I have seen a vendor that sells a shorter cover that will work with that coil. It's just long enough to cover the back of the plenum and it's curved to match the dizzy.
