The AC compressor clutch has gone out on my 88 and needs to be replaced. I do not have the R4 compressor as shown in the service manual and the dealership says that I should have the R4 but after the parts guy looked at it he said that I have the longer compressor (Nippon?) and not the short flat one. I would like to buy this from somewhere else besides the dealership since they want $345.00 and Autozone wants $149 but keeps trying to sell me the R4 clutch. Can anyone tell me what clutch I need to buy or help steer me in the right direction? Thanks
Every catalog I have checked shows the car to have the R4 compressor as well. I plan on taking it over to Corvette World this weekend and see if they can shed some light on it and order the correct part. Thanks for checking into it for me.
'88 should be the Nippondenso 10PA20C. Go to the Last Detail's web site http://www.tld-corvette.com. They have photos of the R4 and the Nippondenso compressors (though not for your year). They're about the least expensive for a new AC Delco clutch. If you're buying AC Delco, get the shim kit too as it's not included. When installing, shim until there's .020 clearance between the outer hub and the pulley.
There is an A/C rebuild company in the Plano/Richardson area where I bought my compressor about 3 years ago. Due to a senior decade I can't remember the name. I think it started with an 'H'. They would be local and shoud have what you are looking for.
