Manual shifter linkage problems.
I just realized tonight why my shifter-boot was torn by the previous owner. When going into second, the shift lever goes further back than it should. The only thing that seems to stop it is the tension of the shifter-boot. It goes into fourth fine. Could tranny problems occur if this went unnoticed for awhile? Especially when slamming through the gears quickly?
Also, it doesn't return to neutral position. (I'm assuming it's supposed to return to the right, between 3rd and 4th. Movement in neutral is partially obstructed between the legs of the "H" pattern. When coming out of first or second, the shifter will stay on the left leg of the "H". The spring wants to pull it to the right, but the obstruction stops it. All other cars I've driven, the shifter moved freely across the "H".
Anyone have these specific problems? Some pointers before I get a chance to pull it apart would be great!
Sounds like it needs adjustment and/or cleaning and tightening up. You need to remove the console lid, the shifter cover, the radio & AC fascia, the dash gauge fascia, and the tunnel side cover to get at the shifter. Removing the seat is also advised (easy).
When all that is removed, you can get at the shifter. You'll need a flat piece of stock .090" x .650 to set the neutral alignment.
Most shifters I've seen that were abused had excessive clearance between the plates in the shifter body. Some mashing in a press and a shim or two usually tighten it right up.
If it's excessive clearance in the shifter (usually from a broken or worn circlip), you'll be able to see it almost immediately. I'd say any more than .020" is excessive...
...If you can get a screwdriver blade into the gap between shifter plates, you've definately got a problem...
