Default Torque Spec. For 700R4

I'm replacing the gasket, fluid, and filter on my tranny. The new filter/gasket instructions call for 120 in/lb torque. My Helms calls for 12 ft/lb torque. Are these two measures the same, and are they correct?
I ask, because I was torqueing them to 12 ft/lbs and the bolts felt as if they were fixing to strip  Or am I being paranoid??
Thanks for the advice in advance

I've been trying to get right spec for along time. My sevice manual says 12 ft lbs but that is too much. That would be 144 in lbs. You will twist the bolts off. I talked to GM service mechanic and he tells me 80 to 100 inch lbs. So I did mine to 90 inch lbs and seems right. Not to tight to distort pan, but keeps fliud in. My bolts where also backing out after a time, so this last time i retouqued i put medium strenght lock tite on front 4 bolts as that is where i would start leaking. Hope this helps you out :D

My haynes manuel showed 8 ft/lbs. I have 3 different torques values now  I torqued to 120 in/lbs, it also seemed too high, but they torqued. I did this in 2 stages...80 then 120. Last time I did this, I torqued to 100 in/lbs and my pan kept leaking. Maybe this time it is solved...I hope

I tryed the 12 ft lbs and broke the gasket so I went to 9 ft lbs and I have no problems.

No, they are not the same...120 in-lbs is 10 Ft-lbs(120 divided by 12), and 144 in-lbs is 12 Ft-lbs(144 divided by 12).

My Helm manual for '85, says 8 Ft.-Lb.(96 Inch.-Lb). I used that last time I had the pan off, and no leaks so far....

I just tightened them up to where I could see the gasket start to squish a little.

Thanks for the clarification  I tightened them to 10 ft/lbs - 120 in/lbs.
Hope that's not too tight
