4+3 question
I looked at a 1988 4+3 car today, the overdrive worked great, but it had a grinding noise when shifting from each gear. The reservoir was low on fluid. Could this be a bleeding issue, since it happens in all gears? I wouldn't think all 4 gears would be bad. I have no 4+3 experience so any help is appreciated. I searched 4+3 grinds but did not come up with anything.
Thanks,
Shawn

Try shifting with the engine off vs running. If it goes in and out of gear with the engine off, I'd suspect the clutch hydraulics are the issue first.
It could also be due to air in the system. Here's a quick-and-dirty method that may help. With the engine off and the top off the clutch reservoir, pump the clutch many times then hold it down for abou 5 minutes. At the end of that time hopefully any air in the line will have worked back up to the gooseneck in the line right over the master cylinder. Slip your foot off the clutch and let it pop up on it's own. If there's air in the line, hopefully the action of the clutch popping up will push the air out of the line back into the master and out.
I've done it and it works.

I have to agree that it's a problem with the fluid level or the slave cylinder is leaking. Very easy replace it. You are correct in your thinking that it's not all the gears causing your problem.
