AMSOIL SYNCHROMESH 5w30
CASTROL 10w60
REDLINE MTL 75w80 (actually i'm running with this, no problem at the moment, i would however swap to AMSOIL next fluid change, i'd like to feel differences beetween amsoil and redline)

IMO GM fluid should be ok.... blocker ring are always made of brass Fluid,
10w-60 castrol does not work fine on my zf6. reference notchy shifting, failure of synchros at high rpm, WOT (the shift lever would jam and physically not move into the next gear under some WOT conditions). when i changed the fluid, lots of bronze colored flecks in the fluid. put in syncromesh and no problems whatsoever.

use castrol bmw engine oil for your bmw engine, not your transmission.

engine oil is meant to be ultra slick - no friction. synchros need some friction to operate

id hate for a newb to see this and think they gain something by putting this unusual fluid into their zf6. id hate for them to run into the same problem i did. ive seen othr complaints here about it too (though to be fair, ive seen more people say it worked fine then people complain about it -like me).

btw. mine is a 93 with blue tag and a remanufacturd for gm plaque on it.

transmission works fine and no need for me to do anything to it, other than use the proper fluid which is not bmw engine motor oil (at least in my case).

Then Remove Castrol from my list. Go with AMSOIL or REDLINE or GM

What fluid do you use? Maybe motul?

The previous owner of my car (MSR) used it and I am using it too. It works well. But I believe it is now out of production, so it probably won't be an option going forward.

It's human nature to experiment, to look for "something better" but as far as the oil for my 96 ZF blue tag, I go to the local Chevy dealer, get the recommended GM lube, change the oil frequently, and so far, so good. No problems.

On a side note, speaking for myself, transmission longevity comes first.

So, what kind of oil can you get...and I don't mean olive oil.

Seriously, what oils for high end manual transmission cars are available to you?

The factory service manual recommended lubricant is 2.12 liters / 4.4 pints, Gear Lubricant GM P/N 1052931; if I recall the last time, the part number may have been super ceded but the lube was still the GM recommended lube for the ZF transmission.

I’m looking for confirmation on the superseded part number. Do you know it? I’m in Australia and we dont have any dealers here that can confirm this. Ive done some digging around and came up with; GM - 88900333 and/or ACDelco - 10-4006... Any clarification here would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance!

I also did some "digging around" and found a couple of bottles of the GM stuff I used last. The last fill was with GM p/n 12345349 manual transmission lubricant
