I just got my first Vette a day ago. The only problem with it is the engine
cooling fans won't run. I just found this out today. I'm sure it's a thermal
sensor or the relay itself, my problem is I don't know where either one is
for sure. I think the relay is on the left side of the radiator shroud, but I have no idea of where the sensor may be. If someone could help with the sensor location I'll have a great Labor Day project.
The temp sensor is on the water pump. How many miles??? the waterpump and distributor, called the opti spark, get replaced about every 70,000 miles..... and a new temp sensor comes with the waterpump.
my guess is the relay... allow me a moment to refer to the helms manual... :)
there are two relays mounted next to the radiator... those are the relays you are looking for...
one last detail... this info comes from my 1992 helms manual... but the changes are not that significant.
Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you have a interest in doing some of your own mechanical work. It will save you a lot of $$$ if you tackle some of it yourself. I would strongly suggest you invest in a set of Helms manuals for the car. They come in a set of 2 books and you can find them on Ebay at a resonable price. They are a must and are the same books the dlr. uses to work on the car.
"No I did'nt" The temp got to 220* and I shut it down. Do you know the cut on and cut off temps of the fans? Maybe I don't have a problem at all.
"Other than ignorance"
The first fan comes on at 228* and I think the auxilary fan comes on at 238*. These things run hot on the stock programming. Turn your A/C on and see if the aux fan kicks on, it should with the A/C running.
Thanks for the time you gave me Andy. It seems I jumped the gun a bit.
after reading the replies to my post I sat in the car and watched the temp hit 228* and the fan came on. "I'm not used to this high temp stuff"
I do 90%+ of my own work but this is my first Vette and I have no books.
They will be orderd this week.
Be sure to take advantage of Jeff or Dal, they work at GM dealerships and sell us parts at a significant discount.
Dal's number is 800 362 9494, ask for Dal, not Parts Dept.
When I needed a vacuum booster for my 96 Impala, the local dealer wanted $380 plus sales tax, I needed to pay for it in advance and wait ~5 biz days. I called Dal, he shipped it overnight, cost was $195 plus $35 shipping (the damn thing isn't light).
This is a normal question of new vette owners. We have all sat in our cars and seen this high temp and get scared. IN fact the first time it happened to me I was at a drive thru getting food, I shut my engine down till the food came to the window and after getting the food I ran home at high speed so the engine would cool off. Then I did the same thing as you, ask on the forum what to do...
Don't feel bad because we have all done it....
I've since installed a 160* thermostat and programmed the fans to turn on at 180* and 200*, now my Vette runs between 180*-200* and the oil temp is almost always under 200*.
Talked to Gordon Killebrew this weekend, about this same thing. He said that Vettes are supposed to run around the 230 mark. He said to turn the A/C on, and both fans will kick on. He also said to make sure that the radiator is clean. He is THE MAN on Corvette repairs....
Welcome to the wonderful world of the LT1/4. It's a great engine, but it has a few peculiarities. Don't panic when the temps hit 255 during hard driving. The engine is built to run at panic temps. :D I think we have all asked this question. That said, do keep the radiator clean (at least annually). Keep your hoses in good shape, they'll go before the engine.
