Default Timing question

What causes your engine to get out of time? I have a 1985 L98 with a 4+3 - bone stock. 37000 original miles. I checked and adjusted the timing to-day. It was was off. I'm just curious how it got out of time? Thanks, Steve.

How many degree's was it off.

The factory setting is 6 degrees BTC. It was on the BTC side, but well outside of the marks. I would say at the a finger width before you got to the scale. I'm just curious about what would make an engine jump time like that.

Not unplugging the EST connector before checking the timing. The ECM will advance the timing to 20°. Unplugging the EST connector disconnects the ECM from the distributor.

So basically, I checked the timing incorrectly. As a result, got an incorrect reading. I got my FSM out and followed that procedure to set the timing and corrected the drivability problem I had. When I go to check timing again, I need to un-plugg the EST. gotcha. Thanks for the help. I was worried there may have been a mechanical issue causing the out of time situation.
