can anyone tell me how to check the transmission fluid in my 1985 c4. I bought it in aug 2014. I drove it a little to familiarize myself with it. I saw a small leak between june - oct 2015. It seems to have gotten worse. The battery died shortly after so I need to get that resolved and begin the work to restore the few things that I know need addressing, but want to make sure there's enough fluid in the tranny to move it.
Auto in park running check the stick manual pull the plug should dribble out both on level surface.
the only thing that I will add to Ant Farmers advise is if a Manual trans is Gear oil in the main trans (the T-10 unit the front trans) ATF in the O-D unit the one more rear, be warned the O-D units tend to smell like gear oil if not serviced regularly so don't be fooled. So if your O-D has black Stinky oil it needs a full service

do you mean let it run a while then check it? thanks
Go for a 10 mile drive and check then. Make sure you are on level ground and check. I want fluid moved around, hot and see if the fluid is in good condition with nothing swirling around.
