The easiest way to determine if it is the speakers, or something else up-stream is to take out one speaker and switch it to the other side. If the problem follows, it is the speaker. If not it is the wiring or head unit.

Sorry, I don't know what an 84 has. I just looked up a diagram and the bose uses a fader to move front to rear only. AS someone said, the only sure way to tell if it's a speaker issue is to swap sides with one. (Or replace the one that isn't working, but that isn't free to try).

Yup, Swap the two speakers out with a side that works and see if they are still bad. I know the Bose unit on my 92 has amps built into the speakers and sometimes they go bad, I have had my rear amps rebuilt and they work great. I am not sure if the '84 had individual amps though. If the amp is built into the head unit on on yours, (no individual amps at speakers) I would take a regular car speaker or house speaker or anything you know that works and test it out with the one in your car.
