Default Best stuff to get started with.

I'm looking at slowly acquiring everything I need to program my own computer. I have a 92 so I'll need the chip burner. I like the idea of the flashable EPROM so I don't have to erase it every time.

I have a pretty nice Laptop but I need some data logging software that will run correctly under Windows XP.

I'd say most of the OBD1 software out there will get me the same data and all of the packages will allow me to change the same stuff. What is the easiest to use stuff out there and what does it cost?

I've seen the Diacom screenshots and it looks pretty decent. For what it's worth I would like to have some software that could read OBDII data as well. We have several newer vehicles, so if I could get something that could interface with them without any extra cost (other than the cable) I'd be interested in that.

I am using Tunercat to do my tuning, and Datamaster to log data. As for the programmer, I am using the Pocket Programmer. I also have a '92, and am just getting into the actual tuning, but have the actual burning/logging process down well. Please email or IM if you have any more questions.

I have not seen anything that will log both ODBI and ODBII. Datamaster is a good logging tool from what I have seen. I actually use it to read my Diacom files because it is easier to see the whole picture at one time. It has a nice GUI interface as well.

The OBD1 and OBD2 systems are not compatible so usually you need 2 separate scan tool software kits or modules. In some cases like the MAC tool (#5) the internal programming is advanced enough that it will scan both OBD1 and OBD2 without additional modules.

For Scan tools check out:

OBD1 GM 82-95

2) Diacom at http://www.rinda.com

5) MAC Tools at http://www.actron.com/cgi-bin/web_st...=1194458_16432
6) Craig Moates at http://ice.prohosting.com/moates/index.html
7) AKM cables page at http://www.mindspring.com/~amattei/dss.htm

OBD2 GM 96+
-----------
1) Ease Diagnostics at http://www.obd2.com or http://www.easesim.com
2) Autotap at http://www.autotap.com
3) AutoXray at http://www.autoxray.com

5) MAC Tools at http://www.actron.com/cgi-bin/web_st...=1194458_16432
6) Alex C. Pepper's site at http://www.obd-2.com
7) Snap-ON has a new OBD2 handheld - see Scorp508

* New or used scan tools like those offered by Snap-On and OTC which are often sold at good used prices on the auction sites.

The cheapest scan tool for OBD1 vehicles is probably #5 Craig Moates software. It's FREE. You have to buy or build a cable to connect to the ALDL. You can get an assembled cable or just the parts from #6 AKM cables.

I'm a part-time rep for Ease and I'm always willing to answer questions on the Forum or by direct email. The Ease OBD1 tools is $315 and the OBD2 tool is $350 (before rebate). Ease scan tools include everything but the laptop/Palm Pilot/WinCE handheld and the vehicle. Ease scan tools work with Win95, 98, 2000, NT4.0, XP, Palm Pilot, and WinCE handhelds. I offer a 10% rebate on all Ease purchases made through me. Ease offers a 30 money back warranty period.
