Default Headlight Problem?

1990 Corvette headlights turn on fine , but don't seem to latch in place and will slowly close to about half way, same thing when they are closed. It just seems funny that both started about the same time. Motor runs fine, but you can't manually open or close either one with the manual ****. Could it be the gear and do you need to remove the headlight assembly to replace the gear? Where is the best place to get a replacement?

It's most likely not the nylon gears but the three nylon bushings in each gear case. Get the bushing sets from MAD for a copla $$.

If you cannot manually move the headlights I assume you turn the **** but get not movement. In that case the nylon bushings are likely just powder inside the gear case.

Check the Tech Tips section for info on removing the lights.

For 88 and up, replacing the bushings is simplified

At the bottom of the motor housing, on the inboard side of the assembly there is a round housing, this holds the gear and the bushings

Three small bolts readily visible hold the cover on the gear housing.

remove the small bolts(use an open end wrech on the one that is sort of masked. Use a razor blade to slide under the gasket with this cover and remove the cover

pull out the large nylon gear and you will see the remnants of the bushings. It's prety obvious how the bushings go in.

Replace the cover and reinstall the light
