Default 92-4 LT1 PRIMARY COOLING FAN REPLACEMENT

PRIMARY COOLING FAN REPLACEMENT

The intent of this article is to outline the specific actions required to replace the Primary Cooling Fan (drivers side) on a 1992 Corvette LT1. I am not positive but believe this method is the same for ’93, and ’94 also.
GM Part Number: 22098785 $95 (90 days warranty)
Discount Auto Part Number : PM517 $22 (lifetime warranty)

PEP Boys Part Number : PM517 $29 (lifetime warranty)

1. Place the vehicle on a lift or on ramps.
2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
3. Unplug the electrical connection on the passenger side of the air intake duct.
4. Remove the air intake duct.
5. Remove the air cleaner housing. (Now that you are this far inspect the air filter.
6. Remove the top (drivers side hose) from the radiator and bend back over the alternator.
7. Remove the 6 little 7mm bolts from the bottom of the radiator housing in front of the radiator and under the bumper. Take the clips off the upper radiator support that they are on (the upper removable piece) turn the clips around and put them on the bottom (stationary) radiator support. This way when you replace the 6 little 7mm bolts you can do it from the front of the car and not have to deal with the air pump, radiator overflow and horns.
8. Unplug the two sets of wires going to the Primary and Secondary Cooling Fan Relays on the drivers side of the Upper radiator support. Pull the wires back out of the way.
9. Remove the (2) 10mm nuts and bolts on the left and right side of the upper radiator support, 10 mm nuts (watch the one on the left side rear of the housing…it has a bolt that will fall on the ground) and 13 mm bolts.
10. Remove the (4) 10mm bolts holding the fan in place. They are located on four corners from the fan in what looks like a giant “X” and screw into the Fan shroud.
11. Remove the 10mm bolts that hold the fan shroud to the upper and lower radiator supports.
12. Finally you can move the upper radiator support forward enough to get the Primary Cooling Fan out. You do not need to remove the fan shroud…just the fan.
13. With a 13mm socket, remove the nut holding the fan on the motor. NOTE the threads are backwards. To loosen crank it to the RIGHT.
14. Remove the (3) 10mm screws that hold the motor to the housing.
15. Replace the fan and start working backwards and remember the 6 little 7mm bolts now go in from the front of the car with ease…just what you needed a little gravy at the end of a dirty job.

at the very end when I went to connect my fan wire to the new fan motor, the two parts didn't fit. I think that the connection from the motor is a tad bigger than the connection from the car. Everything else was right on.

Step 7 may require 12oz or more of Miller Light Thinking Fluid the first time you go after those screws.

Seems a lot harder than the way I did it. I didn't have to disconnect the radiator hose and took the whole fan assy out the bottom.
