Vette is backfiring constantly when Let off gas
The backfiring is driving me nuts. I just recently did all of the mods in my signature, and now every time I accelerate aggressively, the car backfires as soon as I let of the gas. The car was running very rich. 10 point something Air fuel ratio. I talked to the guys at Fastchip, and they said it was unusual for someone with my mods. Fastchip reprogrammed my custom chip, and the car seems much quicker now. It will even idle with the A/C on now, but the backfiring is still happening. What are the common causes of backfiring? :confused:

Are the cats intact? If you've got headers, and it's running a little bit rich, coupled with a small exhaust leak and you'll throw a flame out of your tailpipe!

Do you still have the AIR system intact?......... this supplies air to the exhaust system and will cause some backfiring and it's worse if the diverter valve isn't working. Is the vacuum hose hooked to the pump?.... that is a major cause of backfire (no vacuum hose)
Is it just one POP or is it cracking and popping as you slow down....... usually a single hellacious POP is the diverter valve and some cracking and popping as you slow down is usually from the system working properly with that fat mixture.........which might be worse with a cold engine :seeya

If you are running too rich it can backfire or if you have an exhaust leak it can cause bad backfires.

Everything is stock except for the Corsa catback. The stock cats are still there. The vacuum hose is still attached. I am not sure about any leaks, since I am no mechanic. I am planning on doing TPIS long tube headers, so I guess I will live with it until I do the new exhaust and then have the garage check for exhaust leaks.

My brother had the same problem you had in is 99 Z28. His was caused by the plugs you are using. As soon as he changes those Bosch platinum plugs it all went away.
