I'm ready to pull my instrument panel out to have it repaired, and the first problem I'm running into is the headlight switch ****. How does that thing come off?? Small problem....major obstacle. I'm sure it's something simple, but I can't make much progress until I can get that taken care of. Don't want to break it. TIA!

This is only easy when you know how, otherwise you usually break the **** and switch.
1. Turn the lights on, full out.
2. Rotate the **** until you can see a small notch where the switch shaft enters the ****.
3. Inside the notch is a even smaller leaf spring, or at least one end of a leaf sprint.
4. Using a small screwdriver press on the spring in the direction that will remove the know, while, at the same time gently pulling on the ****.
Get a little finish nail...see the grove on the side of the ****? Slide the nail up inside, there is a little clip, push towards the rear ...the **** should slide off.
Unes your **** was glued on. Mine was, had to cut it off with a dremel. However, you can get a replacement **** (not meant for the task) from radioshack. Uses a tenshioner screw. You may need to grind the post a little bit. But the new **** can be had in many styles and colors. Opens up some nice detail possibilities.
good luck
If you have a glued on ****, usual practice was to have a release button or spring somewhere on the switch body itself. Press in on the button or spring and the entire **** and shaft will pull out of the switch body.
I have never seen one that wasn't designed to be removed in some manner, unless someone lost the retainer spring and got out the epoxy to avoid buying a new one.
Anyone else have experience with very early switches 84-85 ?
Many thanks to everyone who responded to my question about removing the headlight switch ****. The 'Vette is in the paint shop right now, but when I get it out, looks like the **** will be easy to get off....now that I know how. I appreciate the help.
