My 1986 Corvette has a rather annoying habit of staying at cruise RPM (~1500 or so) after I let off the gas when coming to a stop. A quick rev of the gas drops the throttle back to idle, but why does this happen and how can I fix it ?? I have removed and cleaned the throttle body, everything moves freely. I replaced the idle air control. The throttle cable slides freely and the spring is taunt. My local vette guy says to replace the throttle body with a 52mm aftermarket... but that's not gonna fix a MAF or TPS problem. What do you experts think ?
Try shutting it off (mabey in gear or something) without tapping the throttle. Then go to the throttle plate arm & see if you can make it close manually. That will tell ya if the shaft is worn causeing a bind.
I guess you could do it running for that matter.
Visually check the arm position while someone eles taps it.
There was someone eles on here recently with a similar problem, try the search feature.
I disagree only because I had the same problem on my '86. Turns out that it was the throttle body, even though it would never stick when the motor wasn't running. What I was told by TPIS is that it has something to do with the butterfly shaft wearing out and getting enough play that when the motor is running the vacuum pulls on the butterfly rod in such a way that it binds. All I can say is that they sent me a rebuilt 52mm exchange and it has worked great ever since.
I had the same problem, ilde high around 1100rpms and tap the throttle, to idle down to 600rpms. I took the throttle body off and completely apart and cleaned with carb cleaner. I checked the volts on the tps for correct voltage. I ended up replacing the tps. Go to this website it has all kinds of help on the settings on the tps. http://www.geocities.com/jgkov/index.html
This solved my problem.
Well I had a similar propblem after I had disconnected the air cleaner . MAF, etc. to the throttle body. Turned out upon reassembly I had repositioned the hose type clamp, connecitng the hose from the MAF to the TB, so that the head of the clamp caught the throttle arm as it swung forth upon acceleration, causing it to hang up and not retunr to closed (idle) position or lower RPM's. Repositioning the hose clamp head prevented it from hanging it up again. Bob WHite
Thanks to all for advice on throttle sticking ? (Sixpack)
As a long time user of camaroZ28.com, I am so happy to have found this board. I got more helpful and knowledgeable responses than I ever have over there, and not a single smart-butt useless response. Thanks again to all for your time - I'm sure I'll be questioning you all again REAL soon as I am learning that an 86 'vette is nothing like my 95 T/A.
