Update onHarmonic Balancer ? How do you know if its bad???????
Well I looked and had let it idle for few while I looked to see if anything looked out of wack... Did not notice anything out of the ordinary....(so to speak)... I then had a buddy turn the A/C on to see if I could see anything different, but I didn't saw nothing.....I went ahead and purchased a new one and a puller, but I could not find a shorter bolt to put in the center of the puller to use as mentioned before on ease on removing it... I have not replaced it yet... but will tomorrow as my company closed all it's offices in rememberance of 9/11.....
I will let you good people know how things turn out... Any other tips on this would be great...

I just spoke to some people about mine going bad, look for rubber r separating from the hub on the dampener. The outer hub could work forwards or backwards but should be flush with the hub backside. A new one is $90 from The Last Detail, they say it can come loose and work its way back to the timing chain cover and wear a hole or it will seprate and can make knocking noise or add vibration.

When mine went out it started squealing just like a loose drive belt, it was the rubber in between the pulley and the dampner. It had become completely seperated and would squeal until it got hot, when I took it off it almost fell into 2 pieces. As for checking it, one good way or the way I found mine, while the car is idleing look at the balancer carefully while someone turns your A/C on, the added torque from the A/C will pull the ballancer noticeably outward on one side if the rubber is bad.

Thanks for the helps guys... I do notice it worse with the air on.... I will check tomorrow... I would do it now if I could, but the little woman might get a tude going......hehehe.... I have been feeling this for a while now... and have been going crazy trying to figure it out... Checked bearings, new wheels and tires.... I am going to change all the rotors as soon as they get here.... But I do think it's the H-balancer..... How much of a pain is this to change and is there anything I need to make it easier....It will be a home job...
Re: Harmonic Balancer ? How do you know if its bad??????? (apollo30346)
It's really pretty easy. I think, if I remember correctly, there are only 3 or 4 bolts that hold it on to the hub that is on the shaft. You won't need a puller or anything, because it is a 2 pc. assembly, when you unbolt it, it comes off of the hub. You leave the hub on the shaft, and put your new on in its place.

DUDE! I just went through the same identical thing. My vibration started at 3000 rpms in every gear. Not much vib. when free revving. The previous owner had the flywheel resurfaced 12k miles before I bought it. Whoever performed the work should not work on bicycles much less VETTES. So, after replacing the flywheel and might as well get the clutch(6 sp) while there, She is running smooooooth.

Re: Harmonic Balancer ? How do you know if its bad??????? (RED1992)
I swar that is what it feels like to me.... But, like I said I have never had to deal with one yet on any of my cars, including the 3 other vettes I've had.... I did not get a chance to look at it today... I was racing the RC car.... ( a vette of coarse).....
I will get out there in the morning and post what I find.... If I need one, can I get one at the parts house? ie Discount or Autozone or Pepeboys....?
Thanks again..... Hpoing this could be the culprit....
Re: Harmonic Balancer ? How do you know if its bad??????? (apollo30346)
Changing the balancer is not that hard. You do need a puller and if possible a bolt that is 3 to 4 inches shorter tha the standard bolt for the puller. Remove the belt and the pulley for the water pump. Then the three bolts that hold the pulley on the balancer and the crank bolt then install the puller, I was able to use the same bolts that came of the pulley for the balancer and use them to secure the puller, install the shorter bolt and start cranking, took me about 20 min to get it off, the key is to get a shorter bolt for the puller.

Going to see what I can find out on my car right now..... I think I will just change it even if I don't see anything out of the norm.... Just to rule out one more thing.... Part can't be to bad in price.....
Thanks again for the help.... Let you guys know how it comes out.....

My bad, I have been refering to a 1992, because that is what I have changed out before, on his 88 you are probaby correct a pully will be required to get the balancer off.
On a 92 its much easier, you don't have a water pump pulley in the way, and you do not need a puller to take the 1992 LT-1 style ballancer off from the hub it is mounted to, unless you remove the hub from the shaft, which is not necesary if you are just replacing the balancer. When I took the bolts out of mine, the balancer fell off in my hand from the hub. :yesnod:
