Hey guys years later still working on my 1985 after fixing the spark issue injectors and 100 other things I'm down to two codes. Code 42 and 32.
I found an old thread of a 1985 with the same two codes and with the EGR valve already replaced and all the vacuum lines new and not leaking other members said look at the EGR solenoid valve and the EGR temperature switch and replace them. I just wanted clarification and possibly some guidance as to where they are precisely on the vehicle especially the solenoid. Thanks in advance guys.
code 42 is the electronic spark timing (EST), code 32 indeed a EGR system failure. before you start throwing parts at the problem, refer to a FSM. you may throw a code 42 by having the EST disconnected for timing. double check the connection, and disconnecting the battery should clear that code.
the EGR valve is in the center on the intake, under the plenum. the EGR temperature switch screws into the mounting flange of the EGR valve itself. the temperature switch has a signal wire connector.
Solid help with the picture and troubleshooting chart, can you elaborate more on what the EST is and where it's at. As for the EGR solenoid wheres that sucker at. Thanks in advance!
Only on '84 and '85. In '86 the temperature switch was moved to the EGR tube between the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold.
- the OP did however indicate an 85 -

here's a couple pics of the EST connector - it's near, and to the right of the brake booster - pretty much standard on L98 cars...
the EGR solenoid is located at the RH, rear of the intake manifold. it will have two plastic vacuum lines and a single, two-wire electrical connector - (85 only configuration)
So thanks to your guys' help I've got it narrowed down but finding that solenoid control valve for a 1985 it like trying to find a flying unicorn apparently, will 1986 work or have you guys found any in stock? Thanks in advance

the EGR solenoid control is a one year only configuration for the 85. the last one I bought was through fleabay. 86 up have different mounting and vacuum line configurations.

Just saying you posted an engine issue. Z51 means nothing and is not "what you have". L98 is what you have.
If you don't want help don't post
Why can't you say something worth a damn and be helpful like cliff or joe instead of just talking to hear yourself talk I'm done with you and your definition of help just stop posting.
If you disconnect the negative battery cable does the code 42 come back? It can be set if the cars timing is set by disconnecting the EST bypass wire. Maybe this flowchart will help with 32.

Haven't checked yet I cleaned the est plugs out with plug cleaner and I removed my solenoid and temp switch and am just waiting for parts the solenoid is just a pain to find. Thanks for your input Mr. ******
