Default 1994 opti cap/rotor question

I have 48,000 miles. And yes, I did a search, no one has asked this. When I disassembled my opti the ring seal where the cap meets the opti body was dry, cracked and broke to pieces upon removal. This is the large O-ring that is like 5" diameter.Opti unit itself was dry, no moisture inside, contacts pretty bad, though. Rotor broke just taking screws out. Anyway...my new cap/rotor did not come with a that new rubber O-ring seal where the cap meets the outer opti opti body. It did come with a replacement the small rotor seal where the rotor meets opti body. I went online and none of the units offered come with this large 5" rubber o-ring seal. So I just used high temp RTV gasket maker since the old seal is not usable. I put a strip of RTV on mating surfaces, hand tightened new cap to opti, after an hour tightened the four screws. Now as an after thought, I'm wondering if there was a better way. Comments? What have others done? I don't want to repeat this job. Thanks Gary

Well the best way would have been to replace the o-ring, but if the parts arnt available then your probably stuck with what you did. I seem to remember my local hardware store having a way to make an oring, where you cut the material to length then glued the ends together. It didn't work very well but it might be better than rtv.

i think you did fine with high temp silicone rtv - assuming you completed encircled the mating surfaces

You forgot the locktight on the screws.
