I have an '86 coupe and am in the middle of replacing the intake manifold gasket. What I would like to know is how much of this polution control crap that is on the front of the motor that all the vacuum lines run to I can do away with. The smog pump has not been hooked up for quite some time and I don't have to worry about passing emissions tests. Anyway can I unhook all of the vacuum lines, cap them off, and take off that crap on the front of the engine while I have all of it exposed. I know that I will through a code if I do not hook the EGR one back up, but what is the one that is coming from the fuel regulator. Anyway just need to know which ones I need to hook back up and which ones I can cap off. Thanks.

Umm.. you gotta be careful.. just because it uses a vaccum line, doesnt mean it is EPA stuff. For example, the vaccum line that goes to your FPR controls the fuel pressure. At idle you have a very strong vaccum on the lines, which closes the FPR. At WOT there is no vaccum, which opens the FPR all the way.

Personally I would put it all back you stand to lose alot more then you will gain if it is not back correctly. Aside from restictive Cats I do not think the rest of the smog crap is that impacting.
Re: Help on taking off polution control BS (hz900)
What I have going. Line from plenum to FPR, line from plenum to the bubble (by the charcol canister.) And then off the plenum to the brake booster.
NOW with that said... I took all the AC/Heater stuff off my car as well as the smog stuff. If you plan on running no AC/Heater then you should be fine with this (note, this isnt a running car yet, so not 100% sure it works :p:).
But in tracing the lines on my 87 and my folks 88 the T's all lead to stuff I didnt need.
I would leave the stuff there, the reason I took all mine off is because the motor is out of the car and everything is easy to get too (made EGR blockoffs, etc).
Goodluck. Hopefully someone else will correct if wrong..
Matt
Re: Help on taking off polution control BS (hz900)
Removed all of it --a/c--smog--egr. I understand that if you remove egr that you will pull a code 32 or34 . you will need a custom chip for that reason. it was really simple connecting the vacum lines --make sure that hook everything back up that you are using and dont worry about the rest. The line from the cat also has to be capped. Unless your doing more mods i dont think that the expence for a chip just to get rid of the egr wouldnt be worth it. Also if you take the smog pump off you will need another belt.
Re: Help on taking off polution control BS (hz900)
Delete it all! :D The only ones that needs to be hooked up are the big one on the left of the plenum(brake booster), and the rear little one on the right(FPR).
The EGR is history, the EGR solenoid is history. Remove the exhaust temperature tube, leave the wire unhooked, it won't throw a code. Cap the EGR port(you can't leave the EGR on the car, it will run insanely lean), and the Exhaust temperature tubes.
The top one on the Throttle body goes to the Cruise Control, the bottom one is for positive crankcase pressure. The left valve cover has a positive crankcase valve, it needs to be hooked up to the intake manifold.
You need to get metal caps for the Air-Tubes going into the headers.
Re: Help on taking off polution control BS (NoWorries)
If I remove the EGR will I through a code? I just don't want that annoying service engine soon light coming on. Also do I have to compensate for no EGR with something else. Hope these ques. aren't to stupid I don't know alot about all this EPA crap.
