Default 1986 fuel injectors

Hi everyone,
I have a alum head 1986 and it runs great! Can smoke the tires and all that...but, always looking for a little more. I bought the car off of ebay as a fixer upper. It has headers and a non-roller cam. My question is as I am retired on a limited budget, what things can I do to further increase engine performance like injectors? Looking for low cost ideas without going to turbo.
Thanks,
Ozzie

Unless your injectors are bad, a new injector will not increase HP. You have to understand that fuel injection is not like the old carb.....to get more HP just increase the size of the carb or go up a couple of jet sizes. The fuel going into the engine of a injected engine is monitored by the air flow going into the engine, the position of the throttle and the O2 sensors. The fuel amounts are constantly adjusted by the computer based on the sensors. This information is compared to tables in the computer and adjustments made.

If you have the car tuned and a custom chip made, these tables are altered to get the most out of the setup you have. Just increasing the injector size will lighten your pocket, the additional fuel flow from a larger injector may be cut back to the injector size you are currently running based on the tune. Thus...no gains.

Remember that HP costs money. The more money you throw at it, the more HP you will get. There are several things you can do outside of the injector idea:
1) Consider 1.6 roller rockers. They will enhance the current cam and may realistically add 5-6 HP. Don't believe the claims of 10-15.....not going to happen.
2) Start to spend more money....new intake. SuperRam complete set up with intake base, runners and plenum. The SR is no longer manufactured so you would have to find one in the aftermarket like EBAY, Craig's List or used from a Forum member. Next intake would be the Miniram.
3) Spend even more money and go for a good set of aluminum heads like AFR or the like. These are going to set you back about $1500 or so.
4) Other gains not in HP but performance would be if you have an automatic, trade out the stock converter for a 2400 stall.
5) Another gain in performance but not HP would be rear end gears.

If you can turn a wrench, then engine work costs can be reduced by doing your own labor.

Thanks for the response. I had an idea injectors would not help. I am an old carb guy. I do my own work as I was a heavy equipment maintenance teacher in an earlier career.

Me too....the old days were more HP, just slap on a 4 barrel Holley and kick ***. If you had fuel and spark....it would run. Can't say that today.

In this case, injectors might help. Probably sat for a while and has varnish in the injectors. Also, if they are Multec, take them to a gravel pit and use for target practice. With the ethanol in today's fuel, they will get eaten up sooner or later. As such, they aren't good when it comes to throwing good money after bad to have them cleaned and tested. Call FIC to have them identify the injector after removal and see what they are. Or a reman and tested set might also be a good idea.
