I'm in the precess of removing the dash on our 1992 C4 and I can't get the tilt rod to break loose. I'm worried about breaking it off - is there any thing I am missing? It's counter clockwise - correct?
I've had mine off. Used a small wrench to grab it on the flats and turn it out just like any bolt.
Thanks - I tried a small wrench and I felt like I was stripping it. It finally started to go and I got it all the way out, now the dash is out and be ready to send a Betee.com.
In my 96, I almost destroyed the rod taking it out by shredding it with a pair of vise grips. The rod had not been removed for the full 20 years I've had the car, and it was frozen in place.
Once out, it was almost impossible to start back into the threaded hole until I chased out the threads with a 1/4-28 Fine die I got from Sears. After I cleared the threads, I was able to screw it in by hand.
I found a replacement rod at Corvette Central and have been studying it for a bit trying to decide how best to screw in the new one, since I still don't have a wrench to fit. Then I found a set of Craftsman Ignition wrenches at Sears, and think I am good to go.
By the way, I went through this ordeal because my speedometer faded away. I got the polarizing film kit from www.batee.com, and followed the instructions VERY closely, and the results are terrific!
By the way, a set of ignition wrenches fit the tilt rod perfectly, that's what I used when I took mine out. In fact I think the set I have I got probably 40 years ago from Sears and they still the job when needed.
The craftsman 5mm wrench seemed to work, but I ordered mine off Amazon, and it didn't arrive until after I replaced the dash. If you drop the steering wheel/column like they say in the directions, you don't have to remove the tilt rod. The dash will come out (1993).
