It's an extremely fine powder that is sprayed onto a part and then baked on. I guess the heat somewhat melts the powder. The result is a very thick very durable coating.
My other intake, accessory bracket and valve covers I gave the same guy $100 for because him and his partner really helped me out and went out of their way to get it done on a Sunday when I needed it.
I'm not stating that powdercoating is not as durable as regular paint, but the claims that you have to hit it with a hammer to mar the finish is complete B.S. This is not an end all be all solution to finishing your parts. It will scratch and dull over time and will need to be refinished over time or following wear. Vette92 had it right about not being able to scratch it with plastic, but able to scratch it with a metal object. My point is that you might save the $$$ and spray paint the part and just re-touch it when necessary. A lot less trouble than this powdercoating fad. :hat
I have to agree with others...you got ripped off. I had the upper/lower control arms on my '70 Chevelle powder coated in '83. I put 8k miles on that car and the control arms still looked new. There were "some" dents in the coating from rock hits, but no bare metal showed through.
Oh...BTW...the car spent 3 years in Ohio with salt as well.
And the "not very many colors" statement is pure BS. The Eastwood catalog has 69 different colors "standard" and they can "color-match" anything you want "for a price". Add the prism effects and it is an even 70. The shop I went to has over 200 "standard" colors in their catalog. If you can't find what you want in there, something is wrong.
Bill,
I'm just getting ready to go pick my entire TPI system up. It is powder-coated flat black crinkle finish. Valve covers are done as well. I paid $300 to have the whole thing done. This is a professional shop, and has a guarantee on their work.
I will tell you for fact that Teflon coating works pretty cool and does not scratch or stain. I dont know how many colors they can do cause I never asked.
