I pulled my optispark last night and was a little disturbed to discover that the lower 1/3 was covered in oily crud (leaking front engine cover). Haven't pulled it apart yet, but am I correct in assuming that oil will find it's way into the optics and royally muck them up?
It's possible that oil CAN get into it. In fact the early models were supposedly notorious for that. I can believe it being that my original opti weighed like 3 times what my new one did.
In any case if it's working just fix the oil leak and then carefully clean up the opti and you should be good for a little while. If oil can run in it can probalby run back out. Look at it this way, oil will keep it from rusting!
Does you opti have 100K on it? If so, you're lucky. You should replace the opti while you have it out. Either way (new or use your old one) take it apart and put a nice Hi-Temp RTV seal on all the pieces. Becareful taking your old one apart, if it's got 100k the seals are cooked and will probably come off in pieces. In which case go to plan A and use a new opti.
