Need your input on Steering rack
Witch steering rack should I buy, new or remanufactured. Also should I buy a new power steering pump at the same time. Car has 70,000 mi on it. :flag

you can NOT obtain a new unit. Not that I know of. They're all re-man. I had one done recently(two actually, one was defective) It's more responsive than before by far.

Power Steering Pumps are $75 from NAPA, that is considerably less than everybody else wants. However, I don't think the pump has to come out to do the rack. Either way, its easy to replace the pump, so I wouldn't do it now. It would be a good idea to get all of the old fluid out of the pump before filling up the system though.
I had my pump fail(Making large amounts of metal) in June. I have over 1,000 miles on the new pump(and fluid) now, and the rack is still working fine. I don't know how much of that metal found its way into the rack, but so far I have seen no adverse effect. Car has 100005 miles on it.

Remanned racks are fine and usually have upgrades like steel sleeves where the wear surfaces are. The pump will be fine and it's not too hard to remove. You should get an alignment when your done though because this will most likely throw your toe in off........... :seeya

i bought the "Z51" rack for mine when i swapped it out, it was the same price as the standard rack and is more responsive in the steering department. i also wound up replacing the pump a few weeks later. prolly best to do it while you got it apart
i got mine reman' althought it has a lifetime warranty....i did replace it TWICE as the first one i had developed a significant leak out of the drivers side boot! :crazy:
