Default Fuel in Throttle Body

Today I took a look at the throttle body and there was fuel in the throttle body and some in the hose from the MAF to the throttle body. I checked the vaccuum hoses from the fuel pressure regulator to the plenum there was no fuel.

Car has been having trouble cold starting, sometimes it will stall, then it will start rough and it'll blow black smoke, then after a few moments it'll clear up and run smooth.

Anyone have any insight? It's a 1989 L98.

First thing I would try is to run the car without the hose connected for a bit. Cap off that nipple. Under pressure, the fuel might come forth. If nothing else, wait till tomorrow and see if it is still wet without the fuel pressure regulator hose. It might be illuminating.

It sounds like your fuel pressure regulator diaphragm has failed. That is the most likely of only a few things that could cause this. Don't ignore or put off the repair.

I can't think of anything else besides fuel coming from the intake and bubbling up which would cause a hydrolock.

Seriously, I agree with you however he has reported he didn't see any fuel so I'm not sure where else to go.

Fuel pressure regulator. Bad diaphragm.

Remove plenum, it's in front of the distributor.

It's the blue thing in the photo.

As Benny42 said in post #3, "Don't ignore or put off the repair."

That fuel you see in your throttle body and in the flexible connecting tube to your MAF indicates that you have fuel in your plenum, as well.

Gas + heat/sparks = fire

Why do you think he didn't see any gas in the lines?

If I said "the only cause of this..." somebody would have offered a different source. But I'm pretty sure it is the only way.

Tried this last night and fuel was coming out of the hose when the car ran and fuel still trickled out once it was shut off. I'm planning on changing out the diaphragm along with doing the plugs and oil.
Thanks for the tip!

I recommend getting GM plenum/throttle body gaskets. They seem like to be a plastic type material that doesn't really leave a mess behind when you remove the parts in the future unlike the aftermarket paper gaskets. Also I've reused the GM gaskets since they don't get damaged when you take the parts apart later unlike the paper gaskets that rip and leave a mess behind.

IMO, I wouldn't just wash out my used condoms and re-use them even on the same girl so I think I'll pass on getting a 2nd round on the gaskets. They are cheap enough.

Something that was meant to fit on a finger won't fit on the sewer pipe of a "johnson" I have.
