If you're only interested in the CRANK you just take the resistance value of the correct ignition key and insert a resistor with that value in the 2-wire connector at the base of the steering column.

Measure the key value at the key, then check at the connector at column base with key inserted in the cylinder. If the value matches then it ain't a VATS issue. If a VATS issue you can expect a dramatically different value at the column base. Do you have a second or more keys?
