Today a had a close one, some guy in a SUV cut in front of me and then hit his brakes. I hit my brakes and I heard a pop and my brakes felt like they just quit. I had a nice firm pedal but I had to really push the pedal to slow down. I started back up and tried the brakes again and the tell tale choosing sound started. Any tips on replacing the booster? Any brands to stay away from?
When I replaced the brake booster in my 1985 I bought the replacement from Auto Zone. The Auto Zone replacement was exactly like the original brake booster on my 1985 and produced by the same company, there was not any difference.
Bought the Cardone unit from Oreillys. Lifetime warranty. It went bad before I had 20 miles on it. They replaced it no questions asked.
It's a straightforward job, it's great if you have someone to help( I didn't ) but not horrible to do by your onesies. My car is a 95 convertible. Dropping the top and removing the drivers seat made it much easier to get in and out, but still had to do some minor contortions to get in and out.
The biggest challenge was getting the bolts on the booster back through the firewall. There's a metal backing plate on the inside of the firewall that drops just ever so slightly and makes it impossible to pass the bolts through. I took a 10mm box/open wrench and went through the hole in the firewall and used it to leverage the plate up and line the holes up. Not super easy but not horrible. Like I said, if you have a helper to push the bolts through while you hold that plate , it's a ton easier.
There are write ups on the forum that go into better detail. It took me about an hour to do it the first time, about 45 minutes the second.
Good luck
I saw that AutoZone has two Cardon units. one costs more, I wonder what the difference is. I ordered the $156 unit. No one had it in stock! I guess these babies are getting old. I priced a GM parts unit and it was $500 plus!
That clip connecting the rod to the pedal is tough to get at. A 6' 200lbs guy needs a shoe horn to get in there. I hope I don't break it.
This car was not designed to replace the booster. I finally got it out, but it took more than an hour, maybe like 3 hours. Auto Zone ordered the wrong part so I went to Rock Auto and ordered a Cardone reman. Nobody carries these booster in stock, everybody had to order from the vendor. So, I wait for a week to get a booster. I hope they send the correct part.
