Default MAF sensor 85/86 issue

Hi Guys,
I believe i have a bad MAF on my early 86. When I unplug it, it idles better, when it is hooked the idle is all over the place and I get a 33 code. The real question is do I use an 85 or 86 MAF? There seems to be a different part number for the 85. The one that is on the car is an 86. Bosch 14094712. It looks old. The reason I am concerned is due to the fact that I need to select an 85 to get the correct data on my scanner. Any thoughts or are both versions pretty much the same thing?

Explain your issue with the scanner & the car - '85 was a single year ECM and very different from the '86+.

I'd make sure the TSB has been performed for MAF reelays and strt from there. This post might be an interesting read for you. There are several others.

Do post your issues with the scanner (brand, software etc) and the "why" you need to ........ do whatevr

That is an interesting article, however, I have it didn't actually have the TSB's attached to it. I will see if I can look them up online.I will check the relays before I replace the MAF. My scanner is an old Autoxray Ez-Scan 5000. It reads the ECM when I set it to 86 but all of the readings are wacked out. I set it to 85 and everything reads perfect. So It's definitly and 85 ECM. Getting back to the MAF sensor, 85 or 86?

'85s don't have MAF relays. They have a MAF burnoff module, which has a relay inside it that does the MAF power and burnoff functions.

You need an '85 MAF sensor to be compatible with the rest of the car.

So if the 2 relays are there behind the battery it needs the 86. If not 85. Correct?
