94 c4 fuel gauge wrong?

94 c4 fuel gauge wrong?
My 94 c4 has just started showing wrong fuel level says quarter of tank then empty for 100ks or so then goes up to half a tank, i thought maybe dodgy fuel sender or something but a mate says could b fuel pump on way out? Does anyone have this issue b4?
