Traveled to Cumberland Regional Airport on Saturday for some fun there.
6th in PAX, 15th Raw during compeition runs.
During the Mason-Dixion shootout, top 8 PA drivers versus the top 8 from everywhere else. I made one run using 1st gear in the slow sections instead of 2nd gear.....dropped 1.1 seconds. Would have been good for 2nd in PAX. Not sure on raw but 45.0 to 43.9 is a DROP!!!
I learned that Mike Moran who runs a C5 in B Street and is a national trophy winner runs there often. I may have to make it a regular stop just to see how I stack up in the C4.
Today at my local region event a very loopy course. 1st in PAX, 5th Raw.
I love it. What mods have you done to help the C4 keep up? Your car sounds real healthy. Built engine or just a killer exhaust? I plan to do the same thing with my newly acquired 86 C4.
Don't need any mods for a C4 to "keep up" in auto x. Decent, modern tires, good alignment and everything in good shape and the car is as capable as any, more so than most.
The last event I did I beat a plethora of late Mustangs and Camaros. Mine is stock except for C5 brakes (which aren't important for Auto-x) and Koni's. My tires are/were 5 years old. The C4 does good.

Not much. It sounds healthy because in part of my external mic on the camera. Also its a custom system hacked from the factory system. Stock manifolds, and functional cats, x pipe in place of resonator, muffler eliminators.
Alignment, Koni Shocks, RE71R's 275/35/18 wrapped on a set of C5 Wagon wheels 18X9.5 with 12mm spacers to correct the offset and push them to the limit for SCCA rules on that, Ferodo DS2500 front pads, Hawk HPS rear, all synthetic fluids, a few chassis/sway bar setup tricks that are nothing special. Honestly that is all. Car is a Z07 suspension car.
A well setup car with a well setup driver is plenty fast. I'm nothing special as a driver, I'm just a good auto-x'er. On my BEST day I MIGHT be a trophy capable driver at SCCA Solo Nationals.
I really don't need to keep up with anything at the local level. Its plenty competitive at the local level. Shoot I WON the Late Model Class at the Great Lakes Muscle Car Challenge back in June. I raw timed a TON of the Early Model class as well. I ultimately lost the FTD for the weekend due to drying track conditions and I didn't get a dry run. Still bitter about that.

Just another reason I enjoy running this car. NO ONE expects to be as fast as it is. Properly setup in a LOW prep class like SCCA B Street, at the local level, with a decent driver. Its quick and puts the hurt on MUCH more expensive equipment.

Totally. That is it. It's right there w/about any stock or stockish late car...but no one expects that to be. But then...there you are. There is fun and pride in that experience.
You won't be close to Mike in your C4, the C5s are a much better car in the class. He is also an excellent driver in just about anything. If you ever wanted to see a well driven C4 you should have been around a few years ago when Ron Dotts was tearing up in his '96 Grand Sport, maybe you saw him run? He's a PA guy also, just located a little more western of you.
93Rubie, in your first two videos where you're taking video from behind/between the two seats, how did you mount the camera? I've got mine mounted on my harness bar in a snap-in frame, but as you can see in the video below it buzzes and vibrates for some reason. I need to try tightening all the bolts that secure that bar into the car, but would also consider another mounting point and method. What do you think?
We had always had big open courses set up by the Cobra and Vette guys, not the Miata crew, maybe it is different on a tighter course.
Maybe. Our courses are in the middle, I'd say. When I auto-x'ed in the New England region, the courses were incredibly tight...and short at ~35 seconds average. Annoying, for my car at the time. Out here, 60+ mph peaks on an average course is the norm. We did one event at the Pocatello (ID) air port where I hit 80 mph, so I'd call that a "fast/big" course for sure, but that one was outside what's normal around here.

I don't disagree the C5 isn't the better car on some courses. On tight stuff, its a toss up IMHO.
Umm...I know Ron Dotts personally. Friend of mine. I had an opportunity to buy that GS.
FWIW, I beat him in PAX and Raw time. He coned away his best run. A 44.4. I managed a 43.9 running 1st gear instead of 2nd at the beginning of the course. Granted his C7 is bone stock so....
Nonetheless my C4 isn't slow and neither am I. I don't doubt Mike is fast. The exact reason I want to run against him. You don't get better at this sport by running against easy people. Besides I like a good challenge.
What are you driving so I can say hi next time I am down?
