Default TB Question, can you over do it?

I have been told its not possible to over TB a motor, because its restricted in front and behind it....

Someone is selling a 58mm TB... wondering what it would do to my motor as it sits (stock TPI). I know when I can afford it I will be upgrading to ported SuperRam system... So I would need one then...
Should I do it now? Or wait? The deal is really good it seems...

Thanks
Matt

This is a topic with much debate.. I fall into the category that claims it IS possible to overdo it. A larger TB will allow as much air as your engine can take, to flow at a lower TPS (say at 80% of throttle). Thus, the upper 20% of your throttle has no effect on your engines response. However, now you are hitting max power at a lower TPS, thus messing up your fuel curves, and spark advance, which depend on your TPS.

Custom dyno tuned PROM or Haltech system are going on the car, so curves can be fixed...

I would think the stock TPI could use all the air I can get it with the rest of the motor how it is....

If the TB is in good condition and a bargain, just pick up that piece now; you can then add it to the 383 and super-ram combo later.

I don't think you'll like the effect of a 58mm TB on a 350 with a stock intake.

65Z01. $150, not sure on condition yet, working... What can go wrong on them? (and whats repair cost)

Its a 383 motor with lingenfelter 211/219 cam, mild head work, LPE headers and full exhuast (3" dual)

The only wearing parts are the throttle shaft & bushings; I believe these can be replaced but not sure where or how much $$.

If your current motor is a 383 then a 58mm TB should be just about right.

Find out if it's a bored out stock piece and if not what brand TB it is and how long in use.

It appears to be a BBK, TPIS style with a built in airfoil type design. Its under the C4 parts for sale section, posted by Tuned87.. its called like 48/58 TB and TPI for sale... has some pics but nothing up close of it. But it doesnt not appear to be an LPE peice...

Thanks 65Z01

I have the BBK 52mm pieces in my IROC and in the Vette.

They seem to be OK quality (operation) wise, but I've had to machine down the front of each unit to better accept the intake bellows. I think this is just a QC issue on their castings though.

Since the new price is around $300, sounds like that offer is worth some investigation for you.

Your stock TB is just fine........52mm is not worth the extra $$$ either. If you decide to Stroke it....58mm. :smash:
