I am replacing the motors and bushings in my 88. Mid-Am and Ecklers only sell the bronze gears for 88. I was just wondering, I've heard that the bronze gears aren't good on the motors. Will the plastic gears for the 84-87 in the catalog work with my 88? If not, is there anyplace that I can buy the plastic ones? Don't really want to spend $120 on my headlight gears.
Ive read the 84-87 motors are the ones you dont want to addd bronze gears because the entire case is plastic and if the motor seized,or spun, the bronze gear wont shear off and may crack the case.
The 88 and later headlight motors are metal and considered sturdier for a bronze gear adaption. At least in theory they are now.
See,one of the reason the gears are plastic is they are designed to strip or shear off some gear teeth in case of a failure to prevent grenading the unit.
I also dont know if the earlier plastic gears would work with the 88 and up.. good question though.Did you check out the other vendors like Zip or somebody to see if they carry a new plastic gear for the 88 and up style?
:)
