Default Advice ... How far do i go

Well i tore into my opti and water pump for the usual reasons. Now that im there i need some advice on whether i need to do more. Here's some background on my 92 vert...

The drive for the water pump, sticking out of the cam cover wiggles back and forth. Doesn't seem good to me. Moves about 1/16" or so total. I think the seal needs replaced. Looks like i can do the seal without removing anything else.

The seal at the opti drive looks pretty worn. The seal for the water pump drive isnt tight around the shaft. Lots of oil on the lower front of engine when i pulled everything apart.

Car has 114,000 on it. Ran strong up until it started missing all of a sudden. I wasnt planning to replace the timing chain or even pull the cam cover or the balancer pulley hub.

So the big question is whether i need to pull the cam cover? Is the play in the water pump drive normal or an indication its worn out and needs replaced so I don't do this job again? Should i pull the cover anyway just due to the milage and its smart to replace the timing chain now?

Let me know what you think from experience.

If you recognize issues and don't want to spend the same money twice or do the same work twice and you can afford to fix your affliction I would say go for it no question about that. Ive never regretted fixing a known issue and keeping ahead of the catastrophic failures. Good Luck !

If the cover is not leaking I would just replace the pump and opti seals. You will open a big can of worms if you pull the cover if not needed. Pull the knock sensors and flush or you will leave a bunch of nasty crap in there.

Back up and running with no leaks. I replaced
All the seals but stayed away from opening the cam cover. Runs great now. The water pump and opti seals on face of cam cover were throwing oil all over the front of the car so it should be good to go now.

I just did the same job a few weeks ago on my 94. I replaced both seals on the cover before installing the new water pump and opti. I went with a vented Petris opti so I had to make a few changes to the intake to add the vent hoses. I cleaned the oil off the front of my engine as well before bolting parts back on. Which Opti did you go with?
