Default 84 intermediate steering shaft....

I have been researching this part on the internet for some time now.. I have found a lot of places out there that have said this is usually the reason for sloppy steering wheels in early c4's. I replaced the rack an pinion a lil while back, and that did remove some of the slop in the wheel. Right now, i still have about 1.5 inch slop and was wondering what you guys think. I have tried to find the part in cat's an online sites, but nobody seems to have it. Only ones i can find are used. i'll drop a thread in parts later if people think this could be the problem.. THanx guys! :jester

My 84 exhibits the same behaviour when turning the steering wheel.
Theres just a spot where it seems to "turn loose".
Only does it when it's cold. < 50f

How about keeping this thread going until the cause is determined?

:yesnod: Cold makes it worst...The rubber contracts when it gets colder. You also want to know what causes this...AGE...the rubber becomes deterorated after 18 years. I would do as I suggested with the fix, as the only thing holding the shaft is the sheer pin. If you leave it to long, the constant rocking back and forth may cause the sheer pin to wear through. And we don't want to see you driving down the road at 65 mph and have the steering wheel do constant 360s.

I will keep the thread going.. no worry.. i took a peak a lil while ago at the shaft itself.. i had my girlfriend turn the wheel while i was playing with shaft.. i heard no clicking, but watching the links themselves, i was visually able to see the slippage... It does not appear to slip much, but it sure does affect the steering.. 1-2 inch of slop in the wheel makes it hard to have accurate steering, an wheel alignment.. I keep you posted.. Going to let car cool, an try to pull shaft out tonight.. If not, i'll have to work on it later this week.. To many tests an stuff this week.. :jester
