Default Squealing noise....

This one is a bit strange; To put the sound into context, I initially thought it was a bearing going out in the accessory drive; an idler bearing for example. So the "squealing" sounds like that might sound.

It's not that though; it does it w/the engine shut off (car moving). Conditions;
*Car has to be hot, or has been driven -doesn't do it cold.
*Any speed above ~14 mph. Noise "shuts off" abruptly below ~14 mph. Noise is overshadowed by wind road noise above 25-30 mph, so most noticeable between ~14 and 20 mph.
*Doesn't change in anyway, w/brake application/release. Pads/rotors new, anyway...although it made the noise before changing them. IOW, not brake related, IMO.\
*As stated above, does it when rolling down the road, engine off, so not engine/clutch/trans related.

I think I'm going to have to get it hot, then hurry up and jack stand it, then have someone "drive it" above 14 mph while I climb under it and look/listen. Super annoying, "junker" sounding, rolling through my neighborhood. Yuck.

Sounds like it can only be a wheel bearing as you pretty much eliminated everything else.

EDIT: Maybe one of the electric cooling fans

yeah that would be annoying.

while hearing the noise, rolling with engine of, (if i understand your description correctly) if you turn the wheel side to side does it affect the noise? your description doesn't match a wheel bearing perfectly but if the noise changed with steering wheel turning that might be good to know.

Can't remember if the cooling fans are independent of the key switch or not. Either way it is a long shot guess as I can't think of any rotating mechanical part that would act in the manner that is being described that hasn't already been ruled out. This is a head scratcher.

With the engine shut off there is not a whole lot that is moving.

Wheel bearings and u joints are my first thoughts and I have heard u joints make strange intermittent noises. But I don't know why they would turn the noise on and off at about 14 mph.

Good luck and keep us posted what you find.

Oooh, that is a fantastic thought! I'll check. Thanks!

Wheel bearings are 2 years old SKF. U-joints are 2 year old, Spicer.

Tom,
I had a driveshaft universal joint that made a squealing noise because it was frozen up...The way I found it ,was on a lift..When I removed the driveshaft the joint was frozen solid..You said your u-joints are 2 years old, but you didn't say if you replaced the ones in the driveshaft or just the axles ....WW

Replaced 'em all. I replaced everything from the tail shaft bushing, right on back to the hub caps. Part of some good old PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE I probably won't get to it until next week. Need to replace the radiator in our CTS-V tonight...then headed to Lake Powell for the weekend. I'll look at everything suggested of course, and post what, if anything, I find.

Noise is unchanged with brake application and release. Also, just changed the pads and rotors. Noise is unchanged from before the brake change and after.

WVZR-1 is right on the money, as always!

Water was wet, sun was out, temps in the mid 80's, water was flat and calm and oh, so ripable....oh yes it was nice. I didn't think about my 'Vette at all. Got back at 10 PM last night, it's 34* outside and supposed to snow today through Wednesday, so it will be a couple more days until I am willing to drive it and get it hot/noisy. Sorry for the delay.

One thing I love about UT; you can have anything you want, almost all the time.
