Yes when I contacted chevy, they said there was no way of getting one. I'm hoping American Custom Industries in Toledo OH can find me the gear drive I need, haven't found anyone else yet who has one. Although I have found used core engines on eBay for $400-500. Which would suck. I just needed to replace my distributor... Anyhow the crank pulley seems to be just as stubborn, and that's not even considering the fact I need to pull the hub to remove the cover. Either way I'm not sure I have the means to pull the engine so once I can locate a water pump drive gear this may just get towed to a shop. Pretty sick about it at this point.

If an electric water pump would work, looking more attractive all the time IMO.

This was a popular mod at one time and it seemed some people even removed the water pump drive gear to plug the opening in the timing cover. There might be some out there if you're determined you want a mechanical pump.

What really sucks is a little squirt of PB blaster and if you would have gone to bed instead of forcing it. Live and learn.

Yeah, I can't deny that I should have been more patient. It had some soak time, not much, with the PB blast though really the o rings would keep most of it out anyhow, the coupler is still stuck on the water pump shaft currently. Either way it's too late for all that now. I can't go back, gotta move forward.

It looks like electric pump would be more cost effective and less down time. With sleeve still in timeing cover should be no oil leak.Alot of work to correctly replace pump cam drive, cost of new or salvage yard drive assenbly, gaskets, new pump, labor to remove all corractly and replace without haveing oil leak. That would suck.

Well I did get this far tonight.

The seals should really be replaced... if I can rig some kind puller I might be alright. Still a little tempted to pull motor just to clean everything up and re gasket the whole thing. Always wanted to try it. One thing at a time though. I'm not going with the electric pump. I found a replacement drive and I already have a new pump, thermostat, temp sensor, and gaskets so I'll keep trucking will keep updated

I just got a 1992, and the waterpump drive gear was kinda mangled looking. I got the Meziere electric water pump and a "engine watchdog" on ebay in case it fails. You have to pull the intake to replace the gear, and the remove the upper timing chain, If you can even find the part.

Some Vette owners are claiming 6 - 10 years and 50-60 thousand miles out of the Meziere electric waterpumps....I'm hoping for good luck.

Intake must come off too as nentioned.

To get that damned hub off there GM made a special puller, but you can use an old school if you carefully grind three notches in the OD of the hub.

Default Quick update

Pulled intake, going to try to borrow hub puller this weekend to pull timing cover. Will inspect chain while replacing pump drive. Also going to remove valve covers and get that red paint off and replace gaskets of course. Only have a few hours every couple nights but it's getting there. Should have it going in time for another Ohio winter. Having fun though.

Thanks for the interest and input. I've never done any of this before so all the advice I get is certainly useful. Cheers

Glad you're having fun with it. Getting to everything is much easier is you put the front on jackstands and remove the wheels; just don't stab your ceiling with your hood if you go that route. Others may have differing opinions on this, but I would pull the rockers too to avoid the valvespring pressure from causing any changes in the cam position when you remove the gear and chain. Adjusting the valve lash is something everyone should do at least once in their life in my opinion anyhow!

eBay, I actually found two different ones in a week and bought both, I installed the better looking of the two, one had a little less wear from the seal. So now I have a spare. I'll likely sell it.

Good job wish you would have cleaned it. Did you locktight the cap and rotor and seal the waterpump bolts?

Yes on thread sealer for water pump bolts. As for the opti I left it as it came to me from PETRIS. I'm relying on their good reputation I suppose..
