I have an 88 Coupe with 85k miles. Our car ran perfectly prior to us installing the supercharger 2 weeks ago & ran fine for a week afterwards. The supercharger is a Paxton with 6psi running. Now 2 weeks later, the car is pinging, leaking oil around the oil cooler (replaced the gasket & still leaking), the intake is leaking, the idle is at 1500 rpm in park (tried to adjust it but it keeps jumping back to the 1500).
I am aware that I need to fix the oil leaks (it's in the shop as we speak) but obvious backpressure. How can I relieve this? (we already have a valve cover breather) Also, will a chip help for the idle/pinging?? Already running 93 octaine.
Re: Problems with Supercharger on L98 (88vetteZ52)
Pull the oil re-fill cap off, rev the engine a bit, and put your hands over the opening. If you feel air hitting your hands, that pretty much says you've got serious problems.
Re: Problems with Supercharger on L98 (88vetteZ52)
He's talking about piston blowby, if you have it at idle you will have more at boost and will have to deal with the crankcase pressure......vent every hole in the valve cover with filtered breather caps including the oil filler cap and you'll be OK . by the way you are not boosting at idle so the supercharger can't have any effect on your ping at idle, it must be something else, did you get a new chip from carrol?
Re: Problems with Supercharger on L98 (88vetteZ52)
It is a carroll kit.
The Carroll kits are a well made kit when they were made. But a lot has changed and my opinion as a previous owner is that they are obsolete. Water injection will work but not as a fail safe for detonation control. The fuel and spark must be addressed and much has changed since 1985 when these kits were developed. As the previous posts have stated you may have a serious problem due to detonation. That in itself can be fixed but unless the tuning is addressed the same problem will continue to occur.
Re: Problems with Supercharger on L98 (Blown Vette)
Went to the shop and got a partial write up of what is wrong with the car:
(we are also going to retard the timing to take care of the pinging at high rpms)
oil pan leak
oil cooler leak
intake gaskets
new throttle body
valve cover leak
Guess we'll get these fixed & look at a rebuild later. :cry
This way we can drive it like hell and not feel bad because it's got a new engine in it
Besides, I've got a couple races coming up real soon (Z3 M roadster & a turbo focus they are  thinking they have a chance :smash: ) :D
Re: Problems with Supercharger on L98 (88vetteZ52)
I'd say the 1500 idle is a gasket in the intake area leaking air in to the engine. I have a Ati Procharged 84 C4. I put on a tuned port a few monts prior to installing the blower. This meant that all intake gastets were in top shape. I had a good friend set me straight on what I needed to do before I installed the procharger. We really went over every thing well just to make sure things would work. I find around 8 or 9 psi the dip stick blows up spraying oil all over the pass side of the car . And it goes smoking down the street. I watched a video of me at the local strip and the croud let out some loud "ooooooo's" when the car smoked up towards the end. It was too funny. As for the pinging, I really don't know about you supercharger system. I wonder if its intercooled?
Re: Problems with Supercharger on L98 (88vetteZ52)
A question just to make sure ...
Do you still have the hose between the PCV valve and intake connected? If you do then you will boost your crankcase too and then it WILL leak all over.
The PCV valve on the drivers side is still connected. As for the passanger side open hose that goes to the intake manifold, it has been disconnected & is being vented now. I have purchased K&N breather/filters for the passenger size & for the oil fill cap. If I need more relief than this, I'm pretty sure I'm lookin at an overhaul.
