Default temp reading pegged

Just installed a 160 degree t-stat, a variable fuel pressure regulator and a new fan relay. Cranked the car and the temp reading immediately read 299. Car runs fine but temp readout never changes. Fan kicks on and off and plenty of coolant. Any ideas?????

Did you put the t-stat in upside down?

The temp sensor is a negative ratio varistor; as the temp goes up, resistance goes down.

So, since it (apparently) shows max temp, the resistance is likely zero; sounds like you have a bad temp sensor or a short in the signal wire (most likely).

Check the wiring comming from the temp sensor up front; there is a temp sensor on the right side below #6 & #8 whose wire might have touched the exhaust manifold (can't remember which goes to the gauge and which to the ECM).

Most likely 65ZO1 is correct. This happened to me, the wire burned through due to laying up against my headers. New wire and the problem went away.
