Default Not the Opti after all??

After having my car run like crap (sometimes) I followed what every one on the forum said which was that the opti was shot. Well I removed the opti and took it apart and lo and behold-DRY as a bone. The rotor was a little pitted so I cleaned it up with a points file but otherwise looked prefect. Would my next step be the computer? It will run rough and stumble and surge at any speed. I can give it a bunch of throttle and it smooths out sometimes for a while and sometime just a few seconds or so. It doesn't throw a code. Sometimes it won't do it for hours and sometimes it will do it all the time. I don't want to just start replacing everything until it works so I thought I could get some help from you guys. I have replaced the plugs and wires and now with the opti looking good I was stumped. Any help is appreciated. TIA. :flag

Just because the opti is dry, does not mean it is OK. Getting water on the opti only enhances the chances for the opti to quit prematurely. I ve heard of people only getting 30,000 to 40,000 miles on an opti that never had water get on it.

I am having a similiar problem with my 92. Though I have not found it in an attempt I purchased a HDLC connecotr and software to run captures on the car while I drove it. Unfortunatley the he had a 94 and that connector does not line up with my connector. If you are intrested I will sell you the software and the connector for a laptop/Pc. 80.00 chriskekow@yahoo.com

But would it be intermittent like that? The other weird thing that I didn't put in the first post is that when it happens andit is running rough as I come to a stop it will smooth out. Not as I stop but a the exact moment that the car stops. I thought this was strange.

Well, to be honest, I have been one of the lucky ones. I haven't had to experience an opti going to crap. Just from what I've read, and what other friends have said about them. I have heard that they do act weird sometimes, but your's smoothing out when you come to a stop does sound like it would be something else other than the opti. From what I have read, opti's acting weird tend to be temp. related. Weird when hot, fine when cool, things like that.

Sounds to me like fuel sys. I would check fuel pressure, and replace f. filter then check f. pressure again. Then maybe look @ fuel pump and screen in tank for debris. Good Luck. VETTE :seeya

I'm thinking that I might call Gordon Killebrew on this one. Does anyone have any experience with using his phone service? :seeya

The symptoms of the opti can vary, it should run smoother when it is going bad while no load conditions are applied. The opti is a funny thing, it starts out intermittent or irratic then slowly will get worse until complete failure. If you had it apart you should have just replaced it, that is more then half the battle.

Replaced the opti and wires on my 95 with 43,000 miles back in June. Originating symptoms were rough idle (especially with AC on) and power loss going up grades. The car seemed better for a while but never totally eliminated the rough idle with AC on--recently has gotten much, much worse and hitting a grade a freeeway speed really brings out intermittent power loss. Other forum members have suggested clogged cat. I talked with the dealer and will be bringing it back in in a few weeks when I get the chance. He agreed it could be a clogged cat but also offered the possibility of the coil breaking down as the engine heated up and/or quirky injector (fuel filter is ruled out as I recently did a fuel system service).

Thanks for the input. I called Gordon Killebrew today and he told me how to check the CCM codes. The one that came up was an H78 which he said was do to the fact that I have a switch on my two cooling fans and this set a code. He also told me how to clear the codes so I can see if anything pops up again. I sealed my opti and will install it this weekend and see what happens! Thanks again. Robert

Just a suggestion:
In the dark with the car running, check for sparks on both sides of the engine. If you find some have a flash light or some sort of light source and identify the spark plug wire and location were it's making contact.
Once identified, readjust wires and verify results..
