I've recently built up a 383 for my 89 and it is slowly dawning on me that I will have to burn a chip to get where I want to be. I've been reading all the stuff I can find and checking out the posts on this forum (many great links). I'm missing the most basic question. Do I need a scanner and a laptop both? or do I load software that makes the laptop into a scanner and therefore I simply need a cable to adapt the laptop to the car? I am computer literate but don't own a laptop and really have no need/desire to own one until now. It my understanding that no one makes a Palm interfacae for OBD I, correct? Does anybody make a scanning device that I can put in the car and record "snapshots" of performance and then bring it back in the house and analyse the data on a desktop computer? All input appreciated!
Re: Help newbie get started burning chips (Kendall)
Background info:
Scanner is any device that will translate the ECM data into human type info.
Editor is a device that will allow you to easily modify PROM/FLASH data.
Programmer is a device that will reprogram your PROM/FLASH for you.
Weather you do either or any of these w/ a PC or a Laptop, or hand held, that's your call.
Scan it
Evaluate the scanned data
Modify the PROM data
Program the updated data
Repeat process until happy
