I had to take my exhaust loose from the maifold in order to drop my transmission. As it would happen I got 5 nuts off before I broke the 6th stud. How is the best way to repair this stud? Its on the passenger side next to the block. (Couldn't have been at outside one) Also is the stud threaded in or pressed in? Thanks for any help. :chevy
Re: Broken stud on exhaust manifold. (Toms86vette)
That stud is threaded into the manifold. I broke 3 when I took mine off.. When you reinstall the nuts, make sure to use some anti-seize.
As for repairing, you cant repair the stud.. you will have to call GM and get a new stud. I had my manifold off, and couldnt get the broken studs out, so I took the manifolds to a machine shop, and they removed them for me. You can try taking the manifold off, and soak the end in penetrating oil.. then try using a vice grip, but you probably cant get enough grip.

That happened to me also...What I did was drill out the stud (started with a small bit, and worked my way up) Then I took a tap (nice and sharp) put the tap in a socket with an extention and retaped it. Worked great. You may need to flatten out the stud where it is broken with a dramel tool. But its a way out and not having to take the manifold off.
JonM - I had thought of that but as luck has or should I say "Murphuys Law" the stud that is broke is on the inside next to the block. Looks like I'll take it off to repair. Tom :mad
Would love to replace with LT headers. But looks like I'll have to rebuild my transmission first. Thats why the stud got broken. When it rains it pours. I've been looking for some good headers. :bs
I hate that for ya, I broke the exact same one doing the exact same job..... Here's what I did,........I was lucky enough that a little bit of the stud was sticking out. Pulled the manifold, got out the torch, ...........Heated the hell out of it and unsrewed it with a pair of channel locks..... visegrips will work too but I have a pair of channel locks that have been hot before and I use them now. anyway then go to your fav auto store and get a new stud. Oh by the way .....there ARE brass nuts available to eliminate this problem , (or never seize)
Good luck .........Mike :seeya
Re: Broken stud on exhaust manifold. (Toms86vette)
When I did my exhaust I had to replace 2 studs.
They make a stud puller which looks like a female version of an easy out on the inside. It looks like a 3/8 drive socket on the outside. They make the pullers in different sizes, I think the studs on my '85 were 11mm, but I'm not positive. Soak the hell out of the stud at least overnight and be sure your ratchet is centered on the stud to decrease the chance of it breaking again. Total cost for the puller and 2 studs from the auto parts store was less than $15.
