Factory Service Manual. try ebay or C4 parts section
definitely the best guide. If you have a copy reading through the section will give you some idea of what is involved.
Note too that specialized tools are required for proper service, a spreader to remove the gear set from the the case, tools for setting pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash. A hydraulic press and specialized pullers and drivers for bearings and races is also needed to do the job properly.
Measurements should be taken before you begin and noted for reference during reassembly. Once reassembled gears should be checked for pattern using Prussian blue or similar compound, depending on the pattern it is often necessary to disassemble again to change shims until the pattern is correct. Not trying to discourage you, the process in not rocket science but best results are usually obtained with a lot of experience, good luck!

I've always wanted to try it...anything once!! I jumped in with both feet and rebuilt a couple of 700r4's...they both seemed to turn out fine....so i'll give this a shot and see what happens.

Sounds like you are up to the task Tom, patience, perseverance and determination conquer nearly anything.
With Pinion Depth there will be a shim between large pinion bearing and gear of drive pinion. The pinion depth tool is a specialized item not normally part of part store loaner programs. If you don't have tool, shim is transferable so you could try to reuse it set up gear and check pattern. If life is good it will be "good to go". If not you will have to change shim depending on if pinion gear need to go in or out. You might want to have a selection of pinion shims on hand ahead of time. Gear manufacturer techline can also give up advise in regards to set up, not all gears are machined the same.
