1. Who said he didn't know how to adjust valve train?? HE DIDN'T. That was quite the assumption that you've made. HE asked about springs, gaskets and rockers. He DIDN'T ask "how to set valve lash".

A. '89 L98 heads don't have a "pushrod slot". They have a big HOLE for the pushrod that is way bigger than big enough for 1.6 rocker geometry changes.
B. Pushrods DON'T need to be hardened...b/c we're not using guide plates! We're using self aligning rockers, instead
C. LT1 pushrods are no different than L98 pushrods. Why are we talking about LT1 pushrods??
D. L98's DON'T have guide plates
E. They DO have self aligning rockers, so...
F. He's NOT "changing over"


OP is asking which Felpro seals what springs, retainers, keepers.

I don't know how you can just standby and read his request for help if you really understand what he asked in this thead.

I read you didn't listen to what I said and don't realize how it can help.
For some reason you have to quote and argue each stament I made. This is supposed to help the OP?? I don't think so.

Actually I really don't care if you don't like my advice as I reciprocate with thoughts of yours. I wanted to keep the OP out of serious trouble and I read he even appreciates that.

I believe you are more than confused and are emotionally hurt by any criticism of your suggestions no matter trivial - like using rope to hold the valves up. The thread now becomes a battle ground for your retaliation. And I've noticed that on other threads you participate in to.

1. My statements help the OP by correcting the misinformation that you posted. Yes, I believe that helps the OP. It does help when talking car parts...that you actually talk about the correct parts. Don't you think?
2. Hurt by criticism? Where did you criticize me? Rope? If you re-read post #5, you can see that I clearly noted that I've used the rope method (among others) and that it works fine.
3."Battle ground"? That is hyperbole, kind of like "how can you stand by"....and not answer a question that wasn't asked.

If you're going to give advice, make sure it's right. Otherwise, it's not helpful...it's misleading. And I've noticed that on other threads you participate in to. (sic)

Thanks for all of the input. I placed my order with Comp Cams and relied on their tech support to give me this parts list:

1618-16 1.6 Full Roller Rockers 3/8" Stud
981-16 Springs
502-16 Umbrella Seals

Do I need the standard Felpro seals as well?

It looks like I ordered the wrong rocker arms noted above. I failed to mention "narrow body" when placing the order. The ones I ordered may interfere with centerbolt valve covers. I'll update the part number when I get them on the phone.

1016-16 1.6 Full Roller Rockers 3/8" Stud Narrow Body

Do the 113 heads have umbrella seals from the factory or am I just covering other seals with the umbrella type?

How did this set up work for you?

With the new springs did you re-use the stock retainers and keepers?

Looking do do the same to my 89....Needs seals figure might as well upgrade while I am in there.

The 1618 rockers do interfere a tiny bit at the PCV 'openings'. Just enough that the valve covers won't fit...



I evaded the problem by pinching those openings just a little bit and after that valve covers fit just fine.

..... The factory uses rubber O-rings on the valve stems and umbrellas .....

I haven't yet had the opportunity to begin the teardown. I plan to reuse the keepers and retainers.

Because they are made of a softer material than the valve or retainer and supposed to comply and mate with them. If you put them in a different place or orientation there could be metal already extruded out of a needed place. Plus they are the first line of defense from dropping a valve. If they were hardened 10 degree locks I would say reuse them. Never lose track of the GM bean counters where $0.05 per engine is a big deal. I worked for many years in an engine shop and while we did not spend money needlessly we never reused them after losing a few engines from failed used ones so every cylinder head got new ones that only cost a few bucks to save thousands. Do with it what you will believe me or not and not willing to debate what I have seen in the real world.

What about the pushrods? Use the stock pushrods, will they work with the change from 1.5 to 1.6?

Leaving the stock cam in place.
