I've just spent the last few hours helping a friend remove a warped K member from his 95 Z-28 and attempting to install a new tubular K member. It's gonna take some body work because the car has been hit before, but we can make it workl pretty easy.
This thing really looks like a nice piece, extremely light weight and it's gonna free up a little room up front. So anyway I'm curious if anybody makes such a thing for the C4? I've never looked real close, are the motor mounts on a removable K member or are they pretty much right on the frame?
If they do make such a thing, I've never seen anybody who has one, why not?
Yes, the vette front crossmember assembly is separate from the frame rails. However, the unit is very beefy for many reasons and I imagine that it should be that way since it serves many purposes. Both the upper and lower A arms as well as the motor mounts bolt to the crossmember assembly. The Mustang K member is different in that it has strut towers that are part of the unibody. I replaced my Mustang K member with a tubular one. I did so mainly to lighten the front end for drag racing. If one were to stiffen up the front of the vette chassis by installing a full roll cage assembly that ties in the front of the frame rails, then it would be logical to replace the crossmember with one that is lighter. The roll cage would stiffen up the chassis and provide an optional mounting point for the upper A arm and a coil over shock.
I do not know of any aftermarket direct replacements for the crossmember. However, many drag racers that add a full cage are doing exactly what I stated above.
