I've had a clicking noise coming from the rear of my 89 for a while that was rather faint and sporadic. I did a track day at NCM in August and since then it's become more pronounced. Yesterday I checked everything from spindle nuts to trying to shake my wheel holding it in the 12 and 6 position and then noticed the metal back plate that clips onto the rear brake pads were falling off the pads and barely holding on! I put a little silicone on the back of the pads and reattached the plates on the driver side and when I moved to the passenger side I found that the back plates were gone! Is this going to cause a safety issue or will it just be a nuisance due to the clicking noise it generates? After reattaching the plates to the driver side I had a neighbor walk behind my car and tell me where the noise was and he said passenger side rear which is the side that has no back plates. Thoughts?
The thin strip of metal on the back? Take them off and toss. Those are for anti-rattle. If the thick metal backing is separated from the pad material block I would replace them.
I tried using HPS for track pads and thought I would die. Their heat tolerance wasn't up to Road America. Everything probably got very hot in your brakes!
Yes it could but there are a bunch of other things too. Try lightly applying the brakes and see if the noise is still there. It's fine to drive it a little with them dragging.
