Out of nowhere my '89 is making a kind of whirring, wining noise that seems to be coming from the area near the alternator. It is only audible at lower speeds and idle and increases when you hit gas but can't be heared if going over 20 mph.
The alternator seems a little hot to touch, yet the volt meter reads as if it's working (13.5 , if revved )
Any ideas, if it's the alt. ...any suggestions on where to get it at a good price? Thanks
Could be the air pump or power steering pump. Remove the belt and see if there is any up/down play on the pulleys. I think my air pump is making some noise like that- a nice eliminator kit should fix it. :)
With the engine idling, unplug the connector on the alternator and see if the noise quits. If so, and the alternator gets too hot to touch, then you have a defective diode and need a replacement alternator.
OK, now I had switched my inst. panel to volt reading for this....I switch back and I can't get it to display the water temp.!!!!
What's up with this?? Anybody??
Dirty switch contact. Try operating the switch several times, or spray it with electrical contact cleaner. Bad connection throught the cluster connector. Remove the wiring harness plug on the cluster and plugging it back in. Circuit board problems , get the board repaired.
